Sobieszewo Island

Sobieszewo Island is one of the most beautiful districts of Gdańsk. It is such an amazing place because of its perfect location: far away from the hustle and bustle of the city, on the scenical island between the Gdańsk Bay and the delta of Vistula River. Sobieszewo Island enjoys the status of an ecological Island. On its territory you can find two wildlife parks: Ptasi Raj and Mewia Łacha.

The Ptasi Raj Reserve stretches throughout the northwestern part of the island. There are two coastal lakes on its territory, which are surrounded by a wide belt of reeds. It is a great place to observe many species of birds. An educational trail has been marked out in the reserve. On its trail you can find information boards and viewing towers, thanks to which you can observe nature.

The Mewia Łacha reserve is located in the northeastern part of the island, right at the mouth of the river Vistula to the sea. This place is one of the most interesting areas in the country in terms of ornithology. During the breeding season of birds, movement around the reserve is limited only to marked trails. Every year an ornithological camp takes place there. Its participants, volunteers and ornithologists, come to ring the birds and make sure that nobody enters the prohibited area.

It is best to visit the Sobieszewska Island from April to October, because it is the right time to observe many species of birds. However, in winter this place also has its charm. If one looks carefully, they may find traces of the beavers’ existence, which they left on the coastal trees. There are also many birdhouses in the island. In addition to pedestrian paths, there are also routes for cyclists. Sobieszewo Island is a beautiful place where human can take a closer look at nature.
