Gdańsk Lech Wałęsa Airport is the 3rd largest airport in Poland. It is located 10 kilometers away from the Gdańsk city centre and 23 kilometers away from Gdynia, in the Matarnia district, nearby a village called Rębiechowo, after which it was originally named “Gdańsk-Rębiechowo”. The airport takes up around 240 hectares of space. The airport receives high ratings among the passengers, with positive ratings averaging around 85%.
The first airport in Gdańsk came into being after World War One, in place of a military airport. From the very beginning it was of an international nature, mainly due to flights to Berlin, Moscow and Leningrad. In addition to that there were regular connections with Warsaw, Szczecin and Olsztyn. After World War Two international flights were gaining more and more importance, especially in the summer season. In 1974 the airport was relocated to its current place to allow for further development. In 1997 a new terminal was opened (known currently as T1) and another one in 2012, terminal T2, which is currently being upbuilt.
The airport consists of one runway, which is 2800 meters long, and two passenger terminals. Terminal T1 handles international flights outside of Schengen area, and T2 – international flights inside of said area as well as domestic flights. The terminals are connected by a pathway in the departure area, after the security check. PKM trains (suburban rail) as well as bus lines 110, 122, 210 and N3 arrive at the airport.
The airport handles domestic flights (to Warsaw, Cracow and Wrocław) as well as international flights to 21 European countries. The most popular destinations are Oslo, Warsaw, London and Stockholm. Yearly around 5 million passengers make use of airport’s services. Furthermore, the airport constitutes the base of operations for many transport companies, which facilitates fast transport of goods to various places in the whole world.
