Cinema in Gdańsk

In Gdańsk, like in most big cities, most cinemas are the popular chains. But if someone is looking for an alternative, they are sure to find it.

The biggest indie cinema in Gdańsk is Klub Żak. Although its glory days, when it was situated near the current civil office building, are long gone, it is still a perfect place to see something different. Besides the cinema, in Żak, concerts and art exhibitions are often organized. In Żak you can often find many different film festivals, like the Russian film festival “Sputnik over Poland”. Besides that movies that no other cinema would screen are often screened here, like the 445 minutes long “Satan Tango” from 1994.

For fans of cinema, who want to watch a movie in an even more intimate atmosphere there are bar-café-cinemas. Two most popular are in the main city of Gdańsk.

Younger one is called “Kino Kameralne Café”. It’s placed on Długa street, few meters under the place where was a very famous cinema Neptun. This cinema, despite the citizens’ best efforts, was closed a long time ago. Kino Kameralne Café continues the tradition of this place. It screens a selection of films, both the current box office hits and less known ones, but you always know that whatever film you choose it will satisfy your aesthetic senses. You can go to the cinema with a drink or a coffee bought at the bar and relax under the medieval ceilings.

One of the first places like this on the map of Gdańsk is a much older café “W starym kadrze”, currently situated on Lawendowa street. Previously this film café was in a much smaller place on the street Grobla I, but it was so popular that the owners decided to move to a bigger place. Now the cinema hall is in the basement and it fits around 20 people. Movies that are screened there are usually the classics. This café offers delicious cakes, coffee and drinks. This cinema is the only one (out of those I mention here) in which you don’t have to buy the ticket – just something to eat or drink!
