Islands in Gdańsk

Because of the location, Gdańsk is a city with very good access to the Baltic sea, but we can find here also a quite good amount of rivers and streams. Within them we can distinguish 5 different islands within the city borders.

The biggest one is “Wyspa Sobieszewska” (wyspa = island). It’s 10km wide and 6km long in the most distant places. It is also the most wild island with protected landscape and 2 lakes inside.
The next one is “Wyspa Ostrów” Before you could access it only by ferry, but nowadays on its southern and eastern part there are bridges. The island doesn’t hold any living houses, only industry buildings and a shipyard.

The two most known islands in Gdańsk are “Wyspa Spichrzów” and “Ołowianka”. Both of them are located in the centre of downtown and are surrounded with lots of restaurants and historical places. They are a common target for tourist and residents of the city who are looking to spend some free time.

The last one is “Wyspa Portowa” it was made in the year 1840 because of the ice blockage on the Wisła. Currently there is a Northern Harbor which is one of the largest ones in Poland. There are also 3 neighbourhoods occupied by over 19 thousand people and some interesting historical objects.
