The National Museum of Gdansk

Department of Historical Art

It’s the main building of the National Museum of Gdansk. In a beautiful, late-gothic monastery thousands of remarkable masterpieces are being kept. Over the course of a whole year, under permanent exhibition, one can see magnifitcent pictures, drawings and pottery from different historical periods. Museal collection includes (among other things) Flemish pieces of art headed by Hans Memling’s The Final Judgement, huge collection of local and foreign furniture and ceramic. The compilation of drawings and graphics is also worth mentioning due to the fact, that it consist of works made by such great masters as Rembrandt or Durer. Museum is open to visitors from Tuesday to Sunday, and on Friday one can visit it free of charge.

Department of Modern Art

The Modern Art Department is located in an antique Abbot’s Palace. The collection consists of a great variety of different pieces of art. Visitors can see paintings, drawings, sculptures, fabrics and ceramic. The oldest monuments are from the late 19th century and the youngest from the present. Worth mentioning is the Theatre Department operating at the Modern Art Department. It documents the activities of Polish theatre. The exhibition features theatrical costumes, costume designs, dolls and props. The museum is open from Tuesday to Sunday and Friday is a day when one can visit it free of charge.

Department of Ethnography

The Ethnography Department is located in an old Abbot’s Granary. It’s collection of … is very … . It consist of over 9000 pieces from all around the country. The museum also has a small collection of weapons, ceramics and ornaments coming from abroad. In addition to very interesting permanent and temporary exhibitions, the museum also offers other attractions; the institution is involved in a lot of cultural events and festivals. The Ethnography department also offers a wide range of interesting workshops for adults (mainly related to yoga and eastern culture) and for children (thematically related to current exhibitions). The museum operates from Tuesday to Sunday, and on Friday one can visit it for free.

The Green Gate and Gdansk Photography Gallery

The Green Gate is located at the Long Market. It is a place where one can see interesting temporary exhibitions of ancient and modern art. Lectures, shows, presentations and concerts are also organized. There is also a Department of Photography at the Green Gate, offering a large collection of photographs dating from the 19th to the 21st century. The museum is open from Tuesday to Sunday.
