Theatre

Gdańsk has a lot to offer for the fans of the theatre, both young and old. New plays are presented in bigger and smaller theatres regularly. The oldest theatre in Gdańsk is Teatr Wybrzeże – it’s building was made in 1801, unfortunately it was destroyed during the war, and stayed as a ruin till the time of renovation in 1967. Today it’s one of the most popular cultural places in Gdańsk. The other popular place is Opera Bałtycka, which at first was united with philharmonic orchestra, but later on the orchestra was given it’s own, very unique building on an island. It’s gothic style can be seen not only from the inside, but outside as well, and it plays the role of tourist attraction. Relatively new theatre in Gdansk was build in 2014, The Gdańsk Shakespeare Theatre. It“s built on the site of a 17th-century theatre, known as the Fencing School, where English travelling players performed works of English Renaissance theatre. Though not an attempt at an exact reproduction, the new theatre combines elements from the design of these earlier theatres with modern technology.

While walking through the Old City, you can see small and almost hidden Teatr w Oknie, which is literally a Window Theatre. It’s one of the tourist attractions during warmer days that’s worth seeing. If someone’s interested in theatres without wall, placed in a picturesque forest close to nature, Gdańsk can offfer Teatr Leśny. It was active mainly before ww2, but nowadays it’s the place where people organise family concerts and events during the summer. Last but not least, Gdańsk can be proud of the oldest puppetry theatre in Poland, Teatr Miniatura. Every year they show about 280 performances and besides that, they organise family workshops, festivals or books exchange.
